Saturday, May 6th was an appropriate day for Porsche of Ann Arbor’s Launch of the New 2017 Porsche Panamera, as it was the same date as this year’s running of the Kentucky Derby. Billed as “the fastest 2 minutes in sports”, the Kentucky Derby has captivated race fans for over 140 years, and similarly, Porsche sportscars have been captivating race fans for almost 70 years. Clearly a perfect pairing.
Approximately 60 appropriately-dressed guests arrived in their Derby Gear and hats. Catering was provided by Ruth Chris and the dealership stocked-up a full service bar which included signature race-day mint julips. In addition to the unveiling of the New Panamera, the event included a charity raffle, silent auction, and race betting. With the stage set, the event would prove to be a great success to everyone in attendance.
John Steinbeck was quoted as describing the Kentucky Derby as follows:
“This Kentucky Derby, whatever it is—a race, an emotion, a turbulence, an explosion—is one of the most beautiful and violent and satisfying things I have ever experienced.” - John Steinbeck
Similarly, that quote could also apply to the new Porsche Panamera. Yes, there is beauty and elegance in the new Porsche Panamera, with it’s new 12-inch high-resolution touchscreen display atop the center stack controls, the entire dash seems sleeker. Digital instrumentation dominates the cockpit, with the center rev counter as the only analog gauge in the instrument cluster. But the heart of each Panamera lives beneath the hood where - if we can make just one-more Derby analogy - up to 550 horses anticipate the pressure of your right foot.
New single and twin-turbocharged engines power the new Panamera models, including a direct-injected 440 hp 2.9 litre V6 twin-turbocharged engine in the Panamera 4S which is basically a two-cylinder-shorter version of the Turbo’s 550 hp 4.0 litre V8. In a typical uncompromising fashion for Porsche, these engine deliver more power and better fuel economy.
Also new for 2017, Porsche’s 7-speed PDK transmission gets an eighth gear, improving gear ratios and fuel economy throughout the range, and Porsche’s new 4D chassis control system is perpetually analyzing pitch, yaw, and roll to compute optimum driving states and then synchronizes all chassis systems in real time to optimize performance. Road and Track raves “…the sheer mechanical grip is astonishing. If there’s understeer, you’re probably driving it wrong.”
Everyone in attendance raved about the event and especially the new Panamera. But don't despair! If you missed the event, you don’t have to miss the new Panamera, as we’re excited to share every new aspect of Porsche’s 4-door sportscar with you here at Porsche of Ann Arbor!
